Spring 1
We had a fantastic start to our new topic last week. Our topic is called ‘How switched on were the Victorians?’
To start off our topic we asked the children if they knew anything about the Victorians and created a class list of questions we wanted to answer by the end of our topic. The children found out the origins of afternoon tea and in particular the famous Victoria sponge cake. The children wrote instructions on how to make the cake, then worked together to make us our very own delicious Victoria sponge. The children learnt that Victorians didn’t have dinner until around 8 or 9pm at night. Anne Russell, the 7th Duchess of Bedford did not like this, and decided she needed a snack during the afternoon! This is where the tradition of afternoon tea and cake came from. The Queen liked this idea and started to have tea parties of her own, creating this Great British tradition. The children enjoyed have their own Victorian afternoon tea party. They did a great job the cake! We also found out how the Victorians entertained themselves. We made zoetropes and played some 19th century games! The children created their own party piece and performed it to their audience!
