Curriculum Intent Statement

We learn, we care, we achieve together

Robert Bakewell Curriculum Intent

At Robert Bakewell, inclusive and holistic education is at the heart of all we do.  We strive to work together with the whole community in building lifelong learners that have raised ambition, are prepared for the challenges of the modern world, and have a strong sense of resilience.  We aim to provide learning experiences that both excite and engage.

Our knowledge engaged curriculum places equal importance on both knowledge and its application in skill. It is a spiral featuring our carefully designed ‘Subject Sequences’ which set out a clear progression of knowledge and skills that are continuously retrieved, built upon and deepened, as the children move through the school.

Each six-week unit features ‘Golden Threads’ which are whole school themes that weave and spiral throughout each child’s learning journey and linked to our RHSE topics, British Values and the 5Rs of Robert Bakewell – our character muscles.

·       Being Me in My World (Me and My Relationships / Tolerance / Resilient)

·       Conflict and Resolution (Valuing Difference  / Mutual Respect / Respectful)

·       Awe and Wonder (Being My Best / Democracy / Reflective)

·       Independence and Choices (Keeping Safe/ Rule of Law / Responsible)

·       Communication and Connection (Rights and Respect/Individual Liberty / Resourceful)

·       Transitions and Change (Growing and Changing / Inspiring)

Every unit of learning is bespoke to each class to ensure all children receive an exciting and engaging, broad and balanced curriculum. Where knowledge and skills are revisited, this is considered as a positive opportunity to retrieve previous knowledge, embed and consolidate skills, deepen understanding as well as build confidence in our learners.

In addition, our curriculum aims to:

  • Promote Holistic Development: We focus on the academic, social, emotional, and physical development of each child, providing a balanced approach that nurtures individual strengths and interests.

  • Encourage Critical Thinking: Our curriculum prioritises skills such as problem-solving, collaboration, and creativity, enabling pupils to think critically about their learning. We encourage our children to express themselves and reflect on their place in the world around them.

  • Ensure Inclusivity and Accessibility: We have designed our curriculum to be inclusive, ensuring that all learners, regardless of background or ability, are supported to achieve their full potential.

  • Embed Core Values: A central feature of our curriculum are the five British Values as well as the five Rs of Robert Bakewell (Resilient, Respectful, Reflective, Responsible). We promote and celebrate an understanding of different cultures and perspectives to foster global citizenship.
