What does — mean?

The children have been learning what this mathematical symbol means. They recognise that it makes a quantity smaller and are using the words subtract, minus, take away and less than. We have used different methods to help us work out subtraction such as taking practical objects away, crossing out jottings and jumping backwards on a number line.
