Our digestive system
In Science this week, we explored how our digestive system worked with a rather disgusting experiment! First, we broke up bits of banana and crackers and mixed them with water to represent saliva. We put them into a ziplock bag with orange juice to represent the stomach acid and we all had the chance to squeeze the bag to show how the stomach muscles churn up food. Next, we emptied the contents into the leg of a pair of tights - which was the small intestine - and squeezed all the nutrients out! Finally, our waste food entered a paper cup - the large intestine - which absorbed all the rest of the water. We were left with a dry ball which represented a stool. It was a fantastic lesson and the children loved it!
